HOW TO USE WINSAFE95
YOU MUST USE THE SETUP PROGRAM TO INSTALL ALL THE FAILSAFE FEATURES.
IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM INSTALLING WINSAFE95 CONTACT US IMMEDIATELY BEFORE USE.
To reinstall read the Setup text file first!
If Winsafe95 has a problem reading or finding files after see the Winsafe
Setup text file.
BACKUP ONLY AFTER WINDOWS BOOTS COMPLETELY AND BEFORE ACCESSING ANY PROGRAMS

SETUP
To install WinSafe95 read the Setup Text file located at the menu
bar SETUP and then SETUP TEXT.
To uninstall Winsafe95 use the UNINSTALL at the SETUP and then
click UNINSTALL in the menu bar.
To reinstall use the Installation program.
WAIT TIME
WinSafe95 can not read files that are in use. If you receive an
error notice during startup; after installing new programs, you
may adjust the wait time. You may also adjust it if WinSafe95 does
not start scanning(the PLEASE WAIT window displays when scanning)
immediately after boot up.
If you hear the hard drive still working when The WinSafe95
PLEASE WAIT window appears: use the SETUP menu to increase
the wait time.
The value is set to 7. Increasing the number will cause a
longer wait time and decreasing it will shorten wait time.
WinSafe95 must wait till the hard drive stop working and all
programs(ie:. virus scanners)have finished booting into
Windows Try rebooting before continuing. If you still
get a message window that WinSafe95 can not read a file
click on SETUP and then WAIT TIME and adjust the value.
If you still get an error message see TESTING.
TESTING
Testing is for when you have installed a program that WinSafe95
can not read. You will receive an error message at startup or
WinSafe95 may report with the REPORT command that a File has been
deleted when you know that one has not. To Fix the problem use The
START TEST command.
If you get a report that files are deleted use steps 1 and then
click on the REPORT button and then TEST COMPLETE. Rerun REPORT.
If WinSafe95 still reports the file as deleted access Winsafe.ini
and under[FILES]add the file name i.e. "Awedft.bmp" without the path.
1) On the menu bar click on SETUP then START TEST.
2) WinSafe95 will now look for non system hidden files. If it finds
one, a message box will appear and tell you that WinSafe95 can not
find a file, line 20. Winsafe95 will also prompt you to backup
now.
If the only message you get is Winsafe asking if you had any
problems click YES not NO. Backup and go to step 10.
3) Write the file name and path down on a piece of paper
i.e.(c:\Windows\system.sys) and click OK.
4) When WinSafe95 is complete click on SETUP and then ATTRIBUTE
5) Type the file name and path in the next box to be displayed, and
click OK.
6) You will now see in the MSDOS window a line similar to the one
below:
"A SHR SYSTEM.DAT C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT"
make note of the letters between the A and SYSTEM.DAT.
In the example the letters are SHR. Then close the MSDOS window.
7) In then next window to appear type the letters that appeared
in the previous MSDOS window (without spaces), and click OK.
If in step 7 only an R was present type the letter R if no
letter appeared click CANCEL.
8) After you have completed step 8 with all files reported click on
SETUP on the menu bar and then on START TEST again. You should not
receive any messages that WinSafe95 can not read a file. If you
still get a message click on SETUP and then WINSAFE.INI Look for
[HIDDEN] and verify that you have entered the correct file name
and path. Then repeat steps 4-9.
9) After you have completed step 8 with all files reported click on
SETUP on the menu bar and then on START TEST again. You should not
receive any messages that WinSafe95 can not read a file. If you
still get a message click on SETUP and then WINSAFE.INI Look for
[HIDDEN] and verify that you have entered the correct file name
and path. Then repeat steps 4-9.
10) Next click on the TEST COMPLETE.
BUTTONS
EDIT SYSTEM : Accesses the system files for editing. You can access
the Win.ini, System.ini, Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Protocol.ini,
and MSMail.ini.
EDIT REGISTRY: Accesses the Registry for editing. CAUTION: Editing
this file incorrectly may crash Windows.
DEFRAGMENT : Accesses the defrager which defragments your files.
You may defrag as often as you like(every day). This general
speeds up your computer.
SCANDISK : Accesses Scandisk, used to repair errors on your
Hard drive.
BACKUP : This button will allow WinSafe95 to backup all your
vital files.
RESTORE : This button will allow WinSafe95 to replace all your
vital files with WinSafe95's backup files. You can use this feature
aid in uninstalling a program that was registered in a system file
if you have not backed up since the installation of the program
you wish to remove.
MSD : Accesses MSD, a diagnostic tool, used to diagnose
problems with Windows 95
REPORT : When clicked WinSafe95 will review all the information
that it collected when you lasted booted to Windows successfully.
Then collect all new information and compare the two. WinSafe95
will then tell you what files have been changed, added or deleted.
EXIT : Shuts down WinSafe95.
MENU ITEMS
FILES
LOG VIEW : Will display a list of files that WinSafe95 has poled.
VIEW REPORT : Displays the latest report generated by WinSafe95.
HELP FILE : Accesses this file.
RELOG : Makes WinSafe95 start a new log. This will over write
the log created at startup, allowing you to create a new
report.
This a valuable feature if you crash to Safe Mode, restore
your files and crash again.
RESTORE
RESTORE : Accessing this will do the same as clicking on the
RESTORE button.
This handy feature is useful when you lose control of your
mouse.
RESTORE TEXT : Accesses this file useful if you loose control of your
mouse.
INSTALL OLD CONFIGURATIONS: If you click on this menu item the next
time you use the Restore feature you will install the
files that you place in the SAFE using the SAVE OLD CONFIGURATION
command. If you have not used that command WinSafe95 will be
installing files placed there when you installed WinSafe95
on your computer. WinSafe95 will tell you when these files
were placed in the SAFE.
SAVE OLD CONFIGURATION :If you click on this menu item the next
time you use the Backup feature you will install the
current files to the SAFE. These files will be used if you
choose the INSTALL OLD CONFIGURATIONS command or if you crash
and need the WinSafe1 command at the DOS prompt.
WinSafe95 will tell you when these files were last backed up.
CLEAR CONFIGURATION SETTINGS: This will remove the setting you set
if you have clicked on INSTALL or SAVE OLD CONFIGURATION.
REINSTALL WINDOWS 95: WinSafe95 will reinsatll Windows using your
cabinet files. This feature is also available at the DOS prompt
See the Restore text.
TECH SUPPORT: If you are a registered user you may get free tech
support from EASY DESK Software with your Registration #.
REGISTRATION : Use this command to enter your registration #
SETUP
SETUP TEXT: Accesses the setup text file used for installing, and
finding and programming files to WinSafe95. You will also
find information need to adjust the WAIT TIME at startup.
WINSAFE.INI: Accesses the Initialization file for WinSafe95 if you
need to edit it due to deleted files or adding files.
WAIT TIME : This command allows to change the startup wait time
for Winsafe95, see WAIT TIME.
START TEST: Puts WinSafe95 in Test Mode See TESTING
ATTRIB : This feature allows you to find what attributes a file has.
TEST COMPLETE: Sets WinSafe95 back to normal run operation.
UTILITIES
EXPLORER: Accesses the Explorer
MEMORY : Will display a window that will show you your available
memory. This feature is handy when a program decides to
rewrite your config.sys and use all your computers memory.
SYSTEM INFORMATION: In this file you will find all the Information
that you will need to have a tech help diagnose a non
recovery from SAFE MODE.
UNINSTALL : This will walk you through uninstalling WinSafe95
BACKING UP
When you got the message Backup Complete after backing up with
no error messages then everything is working fine.
1) After WinSafe95 has been successfully installed and setup,
WinSafe95 will tell you when you need to backup your files. This
will happen when ever a system file changes.
2) Backup your files directly after startup when prompted;
before installing anything or accessing any programs.
3) Winsafe will only backup all your files once after each Windows
startup. If you wish to backup a second time, you must restart
your computer first. This is to insure that you do not save
corrupted files.
ERROR MESSAGES:
1) If you receive an error message after WinSafe95 has been setup
read the Setup Text file.
2) If you receive an error message after you install a new program
read the TESTING section.
3) If you receive error message during startup (rebooting) read the
WAIT TIME section.
RESTORING
Restore only if you have a problem or you installed some program
that you want to remove and did not back up since installation of
that program. Or you may use the INSTALL OLD CONFIGURATION command.
To restore files in SAFE MODE or a lockout read the Restore Text.
HOW WINSAFE95 WORKS
WinSafe95 uses an installation program that sets up its' own
directory; backs up all your vital files and then hides them with
attributes. So that you may not be able to see them.
WinSafe95 also placed additional backup files in the "Safe" when
you installed it. The Safe is a hidden subdirectory of Winsafe.
In the Safe is a copy of the registry, Windows.ini file and your
System.ini. These four files will never be replaced by WinSafe95
unless you request INSTALL OLD CONFIGURATION. They are placed
here for you to use if you should ever backup with corrupted files.
WinSafe95 also takes a picture of your system and saves the current
information in a log. The information is stored until you restart
your computer again and replaced with a new log. This log will not
be replaced if you boot into Windows in Safe Mode. If you request
WinSafe95 will replace it if you click on RELOG.
To view changes made to your system since you last booted to windows
click on the REPORT button and when WinSafe95 finishes reviewing the
log and your current system it will display the information. You can
then see if any changes where made to your system files since you
last booted into Windows successfully. This may take a minute or two.
